The Interact Club meeting today was quite interesting. 2 Past Presidents and the President Elect of the Rotary Club of Greentown came to the meeting too.
We got a new Rotarian Advisor. Its no longer Mrs Chandra, its Past President Anthony Cheong or something like that.
I was asked to help coordinate the elections. There were 4 positions up for grabs, namely, the President, V.P, Secretary and Treasurer. Apparently, only 5 candidates can be nominated for each position.
Nominations:
President: Suhan Logenthiran, Kshitij Verma, Lim Hui Zen, Inbavatthie and Kevin Harris
Vice President: Kshitij Verma, Myself, Elaine, Hui Zen and Vaanawi
Secretary: Teenell, Vinodh Shan, Vaanawi, Lim Hui Zen and Vaanawi
Treasurer: Kian Siew, Myself, Inbavatthie, Vaanawi and Elaine
Results:
President: Suhan Logenthiran (17 votes)
V. President: Kshitij Verma (11 votes)
Secretary: Vinodh Shan (12 votes)
Treasurer: Inbavatthie Ravi (6 votes- Tie with Myself, but I declined the position)
Vhysh and I were quite taken aback with the results. We did not expect Suhan to win the position. He was not even interested in it until Raj nominated him. Apparently the Form 5 thought that Kshitij is not suitable for Presidency, so they pooled their votes by nominating Suhan just to prevent Kshitij from taking the Presidency.
I declined the position of Treasurer as I felt that the position was the most pathetic one. You have to handle money that is not yours. What fun is that? The responsibility is huge and I doubt I will have the time to sit down and do the accounts for the Rotary Club and Mrs Lai.
After the elections, the Rotarians addressed us and the meeting was adjourned. However, the elected candidates were asked to stay and the outgoing board as well. Just as I was about to leave, Vhysh demanded that I stay on as well.
Apparently, Suhan, as the first act as President, made me his advisor after Vhysh told him to. I stayed on and listened to Suhan appointing the 4 Directors.
Director of Funding: Vaanawi
Director of Community Service: Lim Hui Zen
Director of Club: Myself
Director of International Understanding: Kevin Harris
Vhysh was also telling the incoming board to learn from the outgoing board members and Suhan to learn from both of us on how to coordinate meetings and all.
Suhan's election was a major upset. I expected Kshitij to win the position. I didn't know that the Form 5's pooled their votes to prevent Kshitij from being elected.
Anyway, Suhan and his board now has a huge task forward. The Installation is on the 20th July. The Interact Leadership Training Seminar will be once again held in our school on 21st July.
It will be an interesting year ahead and I am beginning to doubt my prediction that the Club will close shop.
Maybe it won't after all...
