Slightly over a year ago, I bought a Nintendo Wii Console from a dealer in Ipoh Parade. He gave 10 free games. The manuals were written in Korean but the software was in English, so I didn't give much thought to it.

Alas, due to my house having wifi, the Wii prompted my brother for an update to its software. My brother happily pressed yes and the next thing he knew was a black screen and an error code saying UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY.

I quickly googled it up and found out that the dealer imported the Korean version of a Wii and changed its software to the US version. This is because the Korean version is cheaper by a couple of hundred bucks. When we updated it, the new version automatically detects such things and bricked my Wii.

I quickly brought it back to the shop with the receipt and the owner told me off for updating it. Apparently because we are using pirated games, we shouldn't update it.

I was outraged. YOU ARE SCOLDING ME FOR UPDATING IT WHEN YOU DIDN'T TELL ME NOT TO? When I relayed my thoughts to him, he was like "Its commonsense not to update such software, even PSPs and PS3s. You shouldn't update it.

So anyway, he promised to see what he can do about it. A few days back, he called and said thats is 350 bucks cuz he need to change the motherboard to "unupdate" the software.

I am currently thinking of lodging a formal complaint to the CPA citing Section 9: Misleading COnduct of the Consumers Protection Law and also to the relevant authorities of him selling pirated copies of Nintendo Games. It is morally outrageous that he sold me something without telling me its true nature, therefore, being intentionally deceitful.

Thoughts?
